Grants Project Manager

The Ferguson Group (TFG) is a bipartisan government relations consulting firm headquartered in Washington, DC, that represents the largest number of local governments of any firm in Washington. We are searching for a knowledgeable and experienced Grant Project Manager that is interested in working with a fast-paced, dynamic team to manage clients, create funding strategies and develop competitive grants funding proposals that support critical projects in communities across the country. This position can be based in Washington, D.C. or remotely throughout the United States.

Under the direct supervision of our Grant Director, this position is expected to have excellent people and client management skills and competencies to address all pre-award grant requirements, from critically identifying relevant funding opportunities to writing and securing competitive grant dollars. The primary role of this position is to organize and develop grants and proposals and guide them throughout the funding process. The position will work seamlessly with TFG team members to ensure that all client needs are successfully met. The Grant Project Manager will interact with clients daily to achieve their funding strategy and will be responsible for managing all aspects of the grant development process including planning, budgeting, writing, submitting, and tracking grants. This position will have direct supervisory responsibility of other relevant employees or contractors.

The TFG Grants Team is specifically looking for candidates that have demonstrated experience researching and securing grants in any of the following areas:

  • Hazard Mitigation Assistance
  • Justice and Public Safety
  • Parks and Recreation

It is expected that all candidates have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a professional and resourceful demeanor, the ability to work both independently and as a team player, and a desire to take initiative and manage numerous projects simultaneously.

This position’s contributions are critical to helping us achieve objectives such as providing needed water, wastewater and transportation infrastructure; supporting public safety and health efforts; protecting waterways and endangered species; addressing various environmental issues; rejuvenating neglected industrial areas into sustainable, vibrant economic communities; developing economic revitalization plans for blighted cities or neighborhoods; and aiding communities with disaster response and recovery.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities, including, but not limited to:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the client(s)
  • Own the quality and timeliness of all final products in the grant development and funding process and the satisfaction of the client
  • Manage employees by providing appropriate direction and ongoing feedback, delegating tasks, and prioritizing work
  • Leads and participates in monthly client calls, taking notes and tracking action items
  • Participates in weekly grant project meetings and provides updates on grant project status and product recommendations
  • Complete weekly client/project status update for Director
  • Assist in the development of spreadsheets to track possible funding sources for client(s)
  • Identify and complete necessary research and follow-up
  • Investigate and identify prospective funding sources and programs to support client needs and local governments in general
  • Investigate and identify prospective funding sources and programs to support the Firms client base.
  • Vet and align prospective funding sources with client project priorities.
  • Develop and manage deadline-based checklists based on funding solicitation requirements
  • Communicate effectively and respond to email, phone calls, and Team chats in a timely fashion
  • Coordinate the communications schedule and set up client meetings
  • Hold clients and grant writing team accountable for interim and final deadlines
  • Guide in-house and contract grant writers in developing the necessary content for grant applications on time by answering questions, reviewing language, interpreting requirements, and advocating for client needs
  • Complete grant forms accurately and on time per funder requirements
  • Develop and format grant budgets, narratives, and other supporting application documents
  • Create templates for clients (letters, Memoranda of Understanding, etc.)
  • Monitor all grant materials and request changes to ensure that they strictly adhere to funder requirements
  • Quality control check and review all client grant materials
  • Package and submit properly completed and timely grant applications per funders’ requirements
  • Consult with funder program officers, as needed
  • Attend webinars and trainings and report findings back to TFG grants team
  • Keep the team up-to-date on project progress, and report any delays in a timely fashion
  • Ensure that all TFG, client work, and application documents are uploaded and filed on SharePoint
  • Assist in any post-award grant revisions and conduct debrief to share feedback on unfunded grants
  • Support the development and maintenance of weekly grant publications, grant databases, grant website, funding guides and funding opportunity summaries
  • Other tasks to support the TFG grant team, consultants, and clients as necessary

Education and Experience:

At a minimum, candidates will have earned a Bachelor’s degree. Candidates that do not have a Bachelor’s degree will be considered only if they can demonstrate a history of securing discretionary competitive federal grants for local governments in the range of $5million+ and project management experience.  Preferred candidates will have at least five years’ experience researching and writing successful competitive federal grant applications. Preferred candidates will have experience working with local governments, special districts, or public utilities.

  • Accuracy in written correspondence, record keeping and ability to work under deadlines is critical
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents and instructions
  • Excellent grammar and strong research skills
  • Ability to understand and analyze project budgets
  • Must be highly detail-oriented, organized and able to work effectively under pressure
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple competing deadlines
  • Ability to manage consultants, clients and work collaboratively with TFG grants team
  • Strong planning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding customer service and diplomacy skills when interacting with clients
  • Experience working in System for Awards management and grants.gov
  • Proficient in researching, interpreting, and analyzing diverse data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Applies new skills and concepts quickly and displays a willingness to learn and improve
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently to achieve stated goals
  • Ability to use independent judgment effectively
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in SharePoint, Teams, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook, Adobe, and internet functions
  • Ability to format and manipulate documents without guidance is essential
  • Ability and willingness to learn and use company-specific software and products quickly
