Brown Announces More Than $4.5 million for the Cincinnati Riverfront
Army Corps of Engineers Provides Funding to Complete Construction Work on Cincinnati Riverfront
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that $4.6 million in federal funds will be used to control erosion and prevent flooding of the Smale Riverfront Park at the Cincinnati Riverfront. The funding is allocated in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) FY2014 work plan.
"The ongoing revitalization of Cincinnati’s riverfront has been a great addition for the city. The Smale Riverfront Park is the newest crown jewel in the Queen City and I am pleased that the Army Corps will continue to fund this project to protect the park from erosion and flooding.” Brown said. "With more and more people moving downtown and into the Banks development, the Cincinnati Riverfront Project is a clear example of how public/private partnerships can spur economic development."
The Army Corps of Engineers has been an active partner with the City of Cincinnati in maintaining the Cincinnati Riverfront. The $4.6 million in federal funding would bring the USACE’s contribution to $15 million at the park. The city, county, and private sector partners have leveraged $10.4 million in federal funds into more than $70 million in a local match. The Army Corps investment has been critical in redeveloping this land into an important economic and recreational asset for Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati Riverfront Project helps link the Central Riverfront attractions to Downtown Cincinnati and other riverfront parks including Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park, the Public Landing, and Bicentennial Commons, achieving nearly three miles of continuous riverfront park and recreation space.
