Towns of Surf City and North Topsail Beach, NC, Secure $237 Million from the Corps of Engineers to Construct Critical Beach Renourishment Project

TFG, alongside Poyner Spruill LLC, worked with the Topsail Island Shoreline Protection Commission (TISPC) in North Carolina to secure a $237 million construction “new start” from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build the Surf City and North Topsail Beach Project, a critical beach nourishment project that was authorized in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014.

TFG Hosts Webinar of Federal Funding Opportunities to Combat the Opioid Crisis

On Wednesday September 20, 2019, TFG in partnership with the National Association of County Administrators (NACA) and ecivis held a webinar on “Federal Funding Opportunities to Combat the Opioid Crisis.” The webinar highlighted federal funding opportunities for local governments and looked ahead to the 2020 opioid federal agenda. 

The webinar featured speakers from the Center for Disease Control and the Executive Office of the President. These panelists discussed what their offices are doing to combat the opioid epidemic and how local governments can stay involved and engaged with them.

Elizabeth (Liz) Vela is a Grants Specialist at TFG with extensive experience in public and nonprofit organizations since 1998. Liz specializes in needs assessments, grant writing, research, and policy analysis. She began her career in San Francisco after earning a BA in Political Science from Boston University, where she worked in nonprofit administration with the Foundation Center and community-based groups. Liz earned her Master of Public Affairs (MPA) from The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at UT Austin in 2000, focusing on public policy, and has lived and worked in Austin, Texas, since then.

Liz spent six years in county government as a planner with Travis County’s Health and Human Services Department, where she developed data products and led community planning initiatives. She also collaborated with community organizations funded by the County. Liz then worked for the State of Texas for six years, specializing in policy research, federal funding compliance, and reporting across a range of public service sectors.

In recent years, Liz has managed large federal funding proposals, needs assessments, and philanthropic grant writing and reporting for a variety of clients, including community-based organizations, universities, and other nonprofit entities. Her expertise spans multiple areas, with a focus on organizational development, program design, and securing funding for a broad range of initiatives.

TFG Monitoring Developments of Temporary Pause of Agency Grant, Loan, and Other Financial Assistance Programs

On January 27, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) under President Trump issued a memorandum titled “Temporary Pause of Agency Grant, Loan, and Other Financial Assistance Programs.” The directive mandates Federal agencies to temporarily suspend the obligation and disbursement of federal financial assistance while conducting a comprehensive review of programs and awards to ensure alignment with the administration’s policies and priorities. As part of this review, agencies are also instructed to temporarily suspend the issuance of new program solicitations.
